Animal Care Committee Mission Statement
To safeguard the ethical care and use of animals in science.
Nipissing University endorses the principles set out by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) in the Policy Statement for Senior Administrators responsible for animal care and use programs (February 12, 2008 - Draft 7), the CCAC guidelines on animal use protocol review (1997), the regulations of the Province of Ontario under the Animals for Research Act, R.S.O. (1990) and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
The Nipissing University Animal Care Committee is responsible for overseeing all facets of research, teaching and testing that involve animal use at Nipissing University. This includes the approval of the procedures to be used on animals and the conditions and facilities under which animals are kept and used. The Committee is also concerned with the qualifications and abilities of the people who take care of and use these animals.
The Committee is responsible for ensuring that Nipissing University animal researchers comply with the mandatory requirements and guidelines promulgated by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and our Terms of Reference.
The Nipissing University Animal Care Committee is composed of faculty from departments that use animals, departments that do not use animals, a veterinarian, technicians, administrators and members of the general public. The Committee reports to the Nipissing University Board of Governors through the Provost and Vice President, Academic and Research.
