Surviving to Thriving: Lakers Wellness Month

The new year is often a time for new intentions, goals, and resolutions. We don’t always get to choose our challenges in life, but we do get to choose how we get through them. 

NUlistens have prepared a month of activities focused on building resilience, shared community, and greater support. We are here to help everyone finish strong. 

Play Health and Wellness Challenge Bingo! 

February 7th to March 7th, 2022  

Open to all Lakers! A 4-week challenge to encourage you to prioritize your wellness and take small steps towards the best version of yourself. Here’s how to play:

Mark off the squares as you complete the activities and challenge other Lakers to join you.

All events will be on Zoom. Register early, some events have limited spaces.
Please only register yourself for events; do not register on behalf of your friends or roommates, they must register themselves.

String Art with The Work Shoppe (art kit provided, pickup in B-210) 
Tuesday February 9 7:00-8:00pm (Limited Space Available, Deadline to Register February 6) 
Get crafty and create a modern and cool String Art Piece in time for Valentine’s Day.  

Chair Yoga with Grounded Studios  
Wednesday February 9 6:30-7:30 PM 

This yoga practice that will assist in opening up areas of the body that are commonly rounded and shortened during the days of sitting and standing. This practice will focus in on range of motion for the joints of the body as well as creating wonderful space in areas such as the shoulders and neck, the low back and hips too!  

Dress comfortable and have a solid chair (no wheels) available 

Guided Meditation with Grounded Studios 
Wednesday February 16 6:30-7:30PM 
Guided meditation will bring great peace and tranquility to the body and the mind. We will start with just a few minutes of movement to get the jitters out of the body and then we will settle into a meditative position, seated or reclined. 
Dress comfortable in a cozy sweater, warm socks and have a blanket 

Stained Glass Mandala Painting with The Work Shoppe (art kit provided, pickup in B-210 before Reading Week)  
Tuesday February 22 7:00-8:00pm (Limited Space Available, Deadline to Register February 15) 
Painting a mandala is therapeutic and symbolic, participate in this unique and creative project to keep your mind and body at ease. The shapes and colours you use will reflect your inner self at the time of creation.  

Muay-Thai Kickboxing Conditioning with Grounded Studios 
Wednesday February 23 7:45-8:30pm 
Get ready to move your way through reading week while keeping strong in this upbeat kickboxing class. Muay Thai is a traditional kickboxing program from Thailand. You will learn ways to build strength and endurance with strikes and kicks while having fun. No experience or additional equipment is necessary!  

Indigenous Art Healing with Nikki Jo Mattinas (art kit provided, pickup in B-210) 
Monday February 28 1:00-3:00pm (Limited Space Available, Deadline to register February 21) 
Get creative in this guided painting workshop that focuses on the benefits that art can have on your journey to healing, mental health, and wellness. 

Eating Healthy with Dietitian Tara Blake: Make your own Burrito Bowl and Apple Nachos
(grocery gift card provided, pickup in B-210) 

Tuesday March 1 6:00-7:00pm 
Registered Dietitian and enthusiastic home cook Tara Blake will walk you through step by step how to make your own Burrito bowl and easy Apple Nachos. With both plant and animal-based protein options, these dishes are sure to become a favourite in your cooking repertoire! 
On a student budget? No problem! Receive a $20 No Frills grocery card to shop for your ingredients (Maximum of 2 cards per household please)

STEP 3. Come to Student Development and Services (B210), show us you've completed one line and win a pair of LAKERS socks (only available in-person).

Unable to attend campus in-person?

Email counselling@nipissingu.ca your card showing you've completed one line to be entered to win some AMAZING wellness prizes.

Get an extra entry by sending us a selfie completing one of the squares, for attending a LIVE event and for blacking out the entire card.

STEP 4. All Entries must be received by March 7th to B-210 (hours 8:30 am-4:30 pm) or email counselling@nipissingu.ca (deadline 11:00 PM).

The winners will be emailed by March 18, 2022.
